A single malt comes from one distillery and uses only malted barley. A blend mixes whisky from several distilleries, usually combining malt and grain whisky. Neither is inherently better; they serve different purposes on a shelf.
The distinction is often presented as quality versus value. That is misleading, and it leads buyers to range badly.
What is a single malt?
A single malt is whisky produced at one distillery from 100% malted barley in pot stills. “Single” refers to the single distillery, not a single barrel.
This is the most common misunderstanding in the category. A single malt is usually a marriage of many casks from that one distillery, blended to a consistent house style.
What is a blended whisky?
A blended whisky combines malt whisky from one or more distilleries with grain whisky. Most of the world’s best-selling Scotch is blended.
Grain whisky is made from wheat or maize in column stills and is lighter than malt. It gives blends their approachability and lets producers hold price and consistency at volume.
Is single malt better than blended?
No. Single malt offers distillery character and commands higher prices; a well-made blend offers consistency and mixability. The best blends outperform mediocre single malts.
| Single malt | Blended | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | One distillery | Several distilleries |
| Grain | Malted barley only | Malt plus grain whisky |
| Typical price | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Sipping, gifting, margin | Mixing, volume, house pour |
What about blended malt and single grain?
A blended malt combines single malts from different distilleries with no grain whisky. A single grain is grain whisky from one distillery.
Both are smaller categories but growing. Johnnie Walker Green Label is a well-known blended malt.
Which should a retailer stock?
Both, in roughly the proportion your customers drink them. Blends carry the volume; single malts carry the margin and the shelf credibility.
A common error is over-indexing on single malts because they look impressive, then finding the stock ages on the shelf while the house blend sells out weekly.
