Scotch Whisky Regions: Speyside, Islay and the Rest

Scotch whisky comes from five recognised regions: Speyside, Highland, Lowland, Islay and Campbeltown. Each has a broad house character, though the boundaries are geographic rather than a guarantee of flavour.

For range planning the regions are a practical shorthand: they tell a customer roughly what to expect before they taste.

What are the Scotch whisky regions?

The five regions are Speyside, Highland, Lowland, Islay and Campbeltown. Speyside has the most distilleries; Campbeltown has the fewest.

Region Typical character Known for
Speyside Fruity, sweet, sherried Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet
Highland Varied, often full-bodied Dalmore, Oban, Glenmorangie
Lowland Light, grassy, gentle Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie
Islay Peated, smoky, maritime Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin
Campbeltown Briny, oily, complex Springbank

What is Speyside whisky?

Speyside is a concentrated area in north-east Scotland around the River Spey, home to roughly half of Scotland’s malt distilleries. The style is typically fruity and sweet, often matured in sherry casks.

Because it is approachable rather than challenging, Speyside is usually where a customer new to single malt should start.

What makes Islay whisky different?

Islay malts are typically heavily peated, giving smoke, iodine and a maritime character. The peat used to dry the barley carries that flavour into the spirit.

Islay divides opinion sharply. It sells strongly to enthusiasts and poorly to newcomers, which matters when deciding shelf position.

Do the regions guarantee a flavour?

No. The regions are legal geographic designations, not flavour rules. Highland distilleries produce everything from delicate to heavily peated.

Treat region as a starting expectation, not a specification. Cask type and age often influence the final character more than location does.

How should a retailer use the regions?

Group by region on shelf and in menus. It gives customers a navigable structure and makes staff recommendations easier.

A minimal credible single malt range covers Speyside, Highland and Islay. Lowland and Campbeltown come later.
